02 Aug Weaving My Art & My Life Biography
Part 1 My Many Forms of ART
I created the image above to share some of the myriads of ways that my ART unfolds and takes form. Being a CREATIVE MAKER & WEAVER, I like to express in many different mediums; from PHYSICAL MEDIUMS, like MARKERS/PENS to PAPER, COLORED PENCILS, PASTELS, ACRYLICS, FABRIC PAINTS, HOUSE PAINTS, CLAY, AVOCADO PITS, and PHOTOGRAPHY of my FLOWERS, BUTTERFLIES and LIFE in GARDENSONG. I have even used LIGHT EFFECTS I photographed and SCANS of PHYSICAL OBJECTS, you name it… If it can help me express the IMAGES that are in my MIND’s EYE, I use them.
Later, because my INNER IMAGES are so much more LIGHT FILLED and DIMENSIONAL than we can usually see with our physical eyes, I began to turn to the COMPUTER to create them into complex OMNI-DIMENSIONAL MULTI-LAYERED ART, such as my VIBRAKEYS , where I merge my PHYSICAL and DIGITAL ART, It is all part of the ART of JUICEYLIVING here on EARTH to me!
Over the years the signature on my ART has changed as my circumstance in my life changed. Born Joan Shurtz turned to Joan Larsen in 1970 to Joan Wienecke in 1980 to Joan Freeman in 1990 to Joan Ov’Art (the name I created for my WILD WOMAN WEDDING) and eventually in 1997 I asked what name would bring more of my TRUE SELF into form and I dreamed a very vivid dream and was shown the name and how to spell it and I now go by Saleena Kí.
Over the years, my ART has taken all kinds of unexpected twists and turns as it weaves the colorful threads of my life tapestry together.
I realized one day that ALL my ART is about TELLING STORIES, in fact most everything I do is about STORYTELLING. Weaving stories into my ART has been a big part of it, too. I consider STORYTELLING an ART
I just passed my 66th year here on EARTH and I am still making ART. Painting with the FAIRIES, co-creating VIBRAKEYS, and sketching our OMNI-D Travel ADVENTURE diagrams. I just finished a FABRIC PAINTING to wear and still LOVE MAKING ART! So to CELEBRATE I decided to tell you a STORY about how my ART and LIFE has woven together over the years. I am going to publish this ART BIOGRAPHY in this ART BLOG in phases. So here goes….
1953-1964 Art of CREATING as a Child
I was born in Baytown, Texas and grew up as a MORMON in Salt Lake City, Utah, in a very ARTISTIC CREATIVE ENVIRONMENT. A certain kind of CREATIVITY runs DEEP in my whole family. My Mother is an Artist with a WILD IMAGINATION who loves to PAINT and CARVE, and my Father was a CREATIVE MECHANIC, a very gifted man when it came to fixing or building anything. We didn’t have much money so with 5 kids they had to be very creative. They showed me, by example, that I could figure out how to make or create just about anything I needed or that I could dream of. I was making ARTISTIC CREATIONS as far back as I can remember. As a young child, in the 1950s, we had a BIG THICK BOOK of ARTS & CRAFTS. It was like a BIBLE to us kids. We spent many hours doing projects from that book! I would go door to door in my neighborhood and sell my ARTS and CRAFTS to the neighbors. We also made up PLAYS and ACTED them out for our FAMILY and FRIENDS. We were encouraged to use our IMAGINATIONS continuously.
Art was ALWAYS my FAVORITE class in school I remember being championed by my 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Walker. She put me in charge of creating a huge mural to encourage us to READ BOOKS. I researched all the books to find the best ones to illustrate and I designed it and helped my team of classmates to create it. I learned some leadership skills and it was full of FANTASY CHARACTERS! It was a very encouraging and empowering experience. The first time I was publicly acknowledged as an ARTIST!
I also started PIANO LESSONS when I was around 5-6 years old. I didn’t have very inspiring TEACHERS but I did learn the basics of MUSIC in the 9 years I took lessons.
I remember when I was around 10 or 11 Mom would gather all of us kids around the kitchen table, spread with ART SUPPLIES, and we would all MAKE ART. Being the oldest child, she began to teach me how to look at HANDS and really SEE and draw them. Then we tried FACES. I was always amazed at how different our NOSES and other features REALLY LOOK than the way we SEE ourselves.
When I was around 10-11, that would be 1963-64, I loved drawing HORSES. I would spend my summers in the SOUTHERN UTAH DESERTS with my country living cousin, Gwen. She had a HORSE we could ride and that is when she and I created our IMAGINARY HERD of HORSES. I would draw each one, including their NAMES & DESCRIPTIONS. I used many LIBRARY BOOKS with HORSE illustrations to learn to draw them.
1965-1968 Teenage Change of Life
In 1965 I was 12 and was in a terrible accident while staying with my cousins in Delta, Utah. One of my cousins was killed and I sustained a head injury. It changed me. I don’t remember doing much art around that time, though I did love to SING and learn to play the GUITAR and wrote my first song at that time. Junior High School was a huge shift, very stressful and of course, my HORMONES started kicking in and my interest in boys and love was beginning to kick in. I couldn’t officially date until I was 16 and my cousin who was dating my best girlfriend set me up with a blind double date. That is when I met Ron, who declared the first night he brought me home that he was going to marry me. I laughed and told him I was way too young!
Oil Painting
When I was 16 my parents gifted me with PORTRAIT PAINTING lessons using OILS from a local woman artist, I think her name was ELLIE. It was challenging and so satisfying. We were all surprised how easily it came to me. Here is the first OIL portrait I ever painted of my little Brother, Rusty.
John Russell Shurtz
Yes, his eyes were that blue and that big and his hair that red.
I only painted a few OIL PORTRAITS before my life took new directions.
In 1968-1970, I took every ART CLASS that I could sign up for in High School. I loved PSYCHEDELIC HIPPIE PEACE ART and did lots of BLACK & WHITE PEN & INK DRAWINGS. I loved CALLIGRAPHY and WORD ART and created drawings with messages I wanted to energize woven into them. Make PEACE not WAR. Make LOVE not WAR. My bedroom had an unfinished wallboard wall above my bed and I spent HOURS and HOURS with CRAYONS and MARKERS creating a MURAL to express my newly awakening self.
1970-78 Art & the School of Life
In February 1970 I painted my second Oil Portrait.
Ronald Kay Larsen
Yes, he was a very handsome young man.
In August 1970 I was barely 17 and married Ron, the summer after my JUNIOR year, and finished my Senior Year as a married woman. I found myself aligning with the FLOWER CHILDREN more and more, becoming a HIPPIE. We began to go CONCERTS and GATHERINGS. I spent lots of time in PARKS and in the CANYONS with NATURE, too, drawing portraits of ANIMALS, TREES and PEOPLE.
I married way too early (I was barely 17) and spent 4 years playing exploring and experimenting, trying to figure out who I was and what I wanted in this world. I did lots of SKETCHES and some ACRYLIC PAINTINGS, including PORTRAITS, HORSES, FLOWERS and NATURE. I loved sketching TREES. They are so VARIED and different from each other. I was attempting to develop my ability to SEE the SHAPES and COLORS beyond the FILTERS that our MINDS place over our SIGHT. This was a time when I was introduced to the ENERGY that radiates from ALL LIVING THINGS and learned to sense it. This continues to influenced my ART over the years.
I do remember around that time having a craving to draw DRAGONS! I wasn’t confident enough to make them look like I could see them in my minds eye so I gave up. There were many IMAGES in those earlier years that went unexpressed because of my lack of confidence and skills to express what I could see in my INNER VISION, that is why I turned to NATURE ART.
